This de-escalation simulator was made for the study 'Sociaal Juridische Dienst'. The goal of the game was for students to train their understanding of 'The Rose of Leary'. They do this by investigating the body language of the client, and picking dialogue options based on their findings which will de-escalate or exacerbate the situation. By completely de-escalating the mood of the client, the student can show that they've got a good understanding of how the rose can be applied.
My job this project, was to do a complete redesign. The project was started as a deck-builder game, where the player could pick cards based on body postures, which they could then play. This way they had to de-escalate a conversation.
The issue was that the core of this game was: Train your understanding of how the Rose of Leary works, through playing a dialogue simulator, where the goal is to de-escalate the conversation.
To approach this, we started with doing away with the deck-building part of the game. It had some fun elements, but it did not service the core. To define this core, we looked at these types of conversations in real life, and how they are conducted. We decided on dialogue choices, and body posture deduction.
Finally, the game became: "Deduce the state of the NPC based on body posture and pick the dialogue accordingly."
